Organized Retail Crime Fighters Descend Upon Atlanta to Fight ORC!Rancho Cucamonga, August 12, 2009 - Upon concluding the Atlanta Organized Retail Crime Conference held at The Home Depot Corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia on August 11, 2009, Universal Surveillance Systems (USS Corporation) announces an outstanding turnout and a highly successful day of education and networking. With nearly 200 law enforcement, government officials and retail loss prevention professionals in attendance, the conference focused on the critical issues related to ORC, while providing a forum for concerned professionals to come together to support each other and discuss the legislation desperately needed to combat the existing and ever-growing threat of ORC.
The day’s agenda focused on attacking ORC from different fronts, from supporting and passing state and federal legislation to working with online marketplace sites, such as eBay, to remove stolen goods off their sites. Special Agent, Mark Selby, of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Division of Homeland Security (ICE), educated the attendees about how ORC groups use money laundering schemes to avoid detection and prosecution, while Chief Thomas Sweeney, of the Glastonbury, Connecticut Police Department illustrated how his department works with retailers to prevent and identify stolen merchandise that is bought and sold in pawn shops in his jurisdiction.
This conference highlighted the impact of networking and the need for open partnership between the public and private sectors. “ORC is reaching epic proportions and is costing the retail industry ten’s of billions of dollars worth of stolen goods. In addition, the threat to consumer and public safety when goods like baby formula and diabetic test strips are sold through fencing operations through unregulated channels is far to great to ignore,” stated Rod Holm, VP Business Development at USS Corporation. “Conferences like this promote the necessary partnership and networking it will take from all sectors to combat the growing threat of ORC.”
This successful conference is just another one in a series of regional ORC conferences, USS Corporation is sponsoring in 2009.
