National Retail Loss Prevention Executives Confer on the Growing Problem of ORC
The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department’s Retail Theft Team hosted a groundbreaking, very well attended conference today on the growing problem and impact of Organized Retail Crime (ORC). Loss Prevention executives from major national retailers and the National Retail Federation provided insight into the financial and security implications ORC has for retailers, consumers, and local governments. The conference, held at Victoria Gardens retail center, was attended by local and regional retailers and law enforcement officials.
Organized Retail Crime is a growing problem throughout the United States, affecting a wide range of retail establishments from popular department stores to supermarkets and drug stores. ORC losses are estimated to run as high as $15 billion annually in the supermarket industry alone, and $34 billion across all retail. ORC is separate and distinct from petty theft in that it involves professional theft rings that move quickly.
Rancho Cucamonga Chief of Police Peter Ortiz, Sergeant Price of its Retail Theft Team, and Crime Prevention Officer Gloria Gomez presided over a conference agenda that included very informative sessions on the scope of ORC, Booster Crews, and the new LERPnet National Database. Speakers included Walgreen’s ORC Investigations Supervisor Frank Muscato, Mervyn’s Special Investigations Unit member James Hooper, and National Retail Federation VP of Loss Prevention Joe LaRocca.
